Black Gold’s pea stone, driveway and crushed stones are available in six sizes to accommodate a wide variety of uses. When selecting stone it is important to consider how the stone will be used.
Pea Stone:
Black Gold carries two sizes of pea stone. The P1a’s generally measure approximately ½” or less, and the P1’s average ½”-5/8” in size. Although the individual stones vary in color their overall effect is gray. Our pea stone has fairly smooth edges that make it a great choice for certain types of underdrain applications. And the size and shape also make this pea stone ideal for edging around pools or other areas where people will be walking barefoot. The disadvantage to their small size and smooth edges in this application is that they will move around more easily than larger crushed stones. Placing heavy duty landscaping fabric beneath them will help keep the pea stones from sinking into the soil and mud, plus the landscaping fabric will help inhibit weed growth. To contain these small stones in the areas that you want them in you could dig a narrow trench or use materials such as bricks or plastic edging.

Driveway & Crushed Stone:
Since the stones are crushed they will have irregular edges that help keep them from shifting the way round or smooth edged stones can. But, the irregular edges can be tough on bare feet and difficult to walk in, particularly in high heels.
Color:
Made from a mixture of washed stones, including quartz, granite, limestone and more, the individual stones vary in color but the overall effect is gray.
Size:
The #1 driveway stones are approximately an inch or less in size.

Landscaping Tips:
- To keep stone from sinking into the soil or mud, and to help inhibit weed growth, where practical lay down a layer of landscaping fabric before you lay down your stone.
- By using the same color/shape of landscaping stone in different areas of your property you will create a unified look. This applies even when the stones are of different sizes. You can also create a unified look if you use the same size/shape of stone but in different colors. For example, you could use #2 red stone with #2 driveway stone or #2 white stone.
- If you have a very steep grade you can take a tip from the highway department – cover it with large stones! Large stones, such as our #3-#4 or #6 crushed stone, aren’t likely to wash away with a heavy rainstorm and the large stones may help hold the existing soil in place. Add some heavy duty landscaping fabric underneath and you will have a pretty much maintenance free and attractive solution to that problem hill!
- If you already have stone in your driveway or other areas of your property and are trying to match it, we recommend visiting the Information Booth at the entrance to our Big Flats location. There you will find samples of all of our stones on display. You’re more than welcome to grab a small sample to take with you, or bring along some of your own stones to match with ours.
